As far as rich petro-states go oman is probably the only great one. Rather than going the glitzy luxury fake route they decided to go for a more modest, comfortable and enriching feeling for their nation.
Getting around Oman is such a lovely therapeutic experience, it feels almost like meditating to drive along the 4 lane silky smooth highways with not a soul in sight.
If you want a Middle East experience that feels like it came from a Disney movie, this is it.

getting around by public transport is honestly an un-fun miserable experience, I highly recommend hiring a car.
Do
Try hiking in a wadi. It combines a mix of shallow swimming and walking, just don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water.
Stay in a dome along the desert, it's a relatively affordable and peaceful experience.
